Salvage yards are a great resource for finding used and salvaged parts for your car. Many times, you can find parts for a fraction of the cost of buying them new. However, it’s important to be careful when shopping at a salvage yard. There are a few things to keep in mind:

Make sure you know what you’re looking for. It’s easy to get overwhelmed at a salvage yard, especially if you’re not familiar with car parts. Take some time to look online or in a catalog to figure out what you need before you go.

Check the condition of the part. Parts at a salvage yard may be used, and they may not be in perfect condition. Make sure you inspect them before you purchase them. If a part is damaged, it’s usually cheaper to fix the original part than to buy a used one.

Make sure a part will fit your car. Many salvage yards have their parts listed by year and make of car, so you can find out ahead of time if a part fits yours. Sometimes, however, it’s hard to tell if a part is the right one. If you’re buying an expensive part, such as a transmission, have a professional check it for you before you leave the yard.

Fabricate Your Parts & Pieces:

Car enthusiasts who build their custom hot rods and other cars sometimes need to fabricate certain parts or pieces. If you don’t have the tools or knowledge to build a custom part, salvage yards may be able to provide it for you. Many junk and used parts dealers can bend and straighten metal pieces and fabricate custom items using original parts as patterns. This is especially helpful if you’re trying to mimic a specific factory-made part that’s no longer available.

Finding Salvage Yards:

You can find a salvage yard in your area by looking in the phone book or online. If you have a car you want to work on, look for a nearby salvage yard and check out their inventory before buying parts anywhere else. The prices you’ll find at salvage yards are usually low because they buy used parts, so you can save money on your project.

Frustrating Finding Spots For Salvage Yards:

As with most things, today finding a good junkyard is becoming more difficult, at least the type where you leave with parts for your car and not just left “holding the bag” of little or no value. Where I live, in the midwest, every time I check the phone book or online yellow pages there are new “junk yards” that have opened up. However, these “yards” are filled with nothing but used tires and rims. Now don’t get me wrong. If you need a set of tires you can save $200 to $300 bucks on 4 new tires. But if you want parts for your car, forget it all they sell is tires and rims! Again, frustrating, to say the least. On the flip side of this coin are others who have junk yards that seem to do anything but buy or sell parts for cars which leaves me with no option other than to order parts from the dealerships or auto part stores such as AutoZone, O’Reilly’s, and just recently Advance Auto Parts to name a few. These places either have someone working there that has no clue how to find simple parts for older cars, or they just simply don’t give a crap.

Ending Notes:

Finding a good salvage yard can be tough, but it’s worth it if you’re looking to save money on car parts. Make sure you do your research before going to a yard and inspect the parts carefully before buying them. If you can’t find what you need at a local yard, try searching online or calling around to different yards until you find what you’re looking for.
